His boyhood was spent in Nobel County, In. In September 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army. He was discharged on July 4, 1865. Engagements in which he participated include the Battle of Shiloh, Siege of Vicksburg and the Battle of Chickamaugua. He was wounded in the last engagement. Most of his life since discharge was spent in Fayette or Floyd County, IA. He was a widower and had three children, then on May 7, 1883 he married Ester Jane Turner (Rush), a divorce with two children Charlie Rush and Carrie Rush. David and Ester had three children, Maude, Frank and Edna.
